About

Gothica is an informal, online monthly reading group exploring all areas of the Gothic in literature and popular culture. Gothica was founded in 2019 at the University of Birmingham by doctoral researchers Katrina Jan and Dr Emily Vincent, then joined by Ross Conway, and you can find out more about us here. Each session is two hours long, hosted by a special guest speaker with academic expertise in the Gothic, followed by relaxed breakout room discussions related to the monthly theme.

You can see readings and clips from our eclectic mix of previous sessions here, from Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn’s focus on 1980s Popular Gothic, to Dr Emilie Taylor-Pirie discussing Contagion Gothic, and many more!

We are proud of our international and interdisciplinary community of attendees from academic and non-academic spheres of life. You can even see some testimonials from previous attendees here. Sessions are open to all so please feel free to join our Gothic community.
